Term 5 Highlights

Year 2 have had a busy and enjoyable term filled with exciting learning opportunities. We explored different beliefs and values, learning about how people show care and respect for others and the world around them. In History, we learned about the monarchy and castles, discovering how they have shaped life in Britain over time.

We enjoyed getting creative through our art work with clay and were inspired by the work of artist Rachel Whiteread. In English, Toys in Space sparked our imaginations and helped us create a range of exciting writing. In Maths, we developed our understanding of measurement, time and fractions through practical activities and problem-solving.

Our Science learning focused on plants, where we investigated what seeds need to grow and explored plant life cycles. We also enjoyed learning about the International Space Station in Computing.

Alongside our classroom learning, we took part in trips, music experiences and sporting activities, developing our teamwork, confidence and independence. We are incredibly proud of all the effort and enthusiasm the children have shown throughout the term.

Year 2 Term 5 Highlights

Term 4 Highlights

This term in Year 2, the children have enjoyed a broad and engaging curriculum, enriched by exciting events such as World Book Day, British Science Week and our whole-school PSHE Day. In English, they explored high-quality texts including Tadpole’s Promise and If All the World Were… developing their writing through sequencing events, using time adverbials and retelling stories with their own creative ideas. In Maths, the children built confidence with multiplication and division, before moving on to measuring length and height using standard units. In Science, they learned about lifecycles, including observing changes in frog spawn over time, and explored the importance of health and exercise. In History, they discovered the achievements of the Wright Brothers and the history of flight, while in RE they explored celebrations such as Easter and Eid. The children also developed their computing skills through coding and debugging, and in DT they designed and created their own fairground models using mechanisms. In PE, they built their skills in handball and dance, improving their coordination, control and teamwork.

Term 3 Highlights

This term, we have enjoyed a wide range of exciting learning across the curriculum. In English, we explored The Bear and the Piano, developing our writing in the first person and using past tense and contractions. In maths, we built on our knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes, explored their properties and began learning about money. Our science learning focused on materials and their uses, while in geography we learnt about our wonderful world and both human and physical features. In RE, we explored the Jewish faith, and in art we experimented with colour, texture and different media. We also took part in a whole-school PSHE day focused on being brave and trying new things, enjoyed music from around the UK, and developed our balance, co-ordination and confidence in PE and swimming.

Year 2 Term 3

Term 2 Highlights

This term in English, we began with Jim and the Beanstalk by Raymond Briggs, where the children discovered a giant beanstalk in the classroom! This inspired lots of creative writing, including making predictions and writing our own fairy tale sequels. We then read the exciting book Wolves by Emily Gravett and even met a wolf expert, Red Riding Hood, who helped us learn that not all books are factual. This supported our understanding of the difference between fact and fiction and the key features of information texts, leading to the children writing factual sentences about wolves. In Science, we explored microhabitats through a bug hunt around the school grounds and by making a wormery. In Sport, we developed our skills in tennis and dodgeball. In History, we learned about how schools have changed over time by comparing schools past and present, and we also marked Remembrance with a special focus on the role of animals in war.

Term 1 Highlights

What a fantastic term of learning and discovery it’s been! 🌟

In English, the children have been inspired by The Journey Home by Frann Preston-Gannon. Through this powerful story, they’ve explored themes of conservation and learnt about the challenges endangered animals face around the world. The children have created fact files about endangered species and written persuasive pieces about why we need to protect them. Along the way, they’ve been learning to identify different types of sentences — questions, commands, statements, and exclamations — and have practised editing their work carefully, thinking about tense, word choice, and word classes such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. 🐘🐧🌍

In Maths, we’ve been building on our understanding of place value with numbers to 100. The children have enjoyed lots of practical activities to help them compare, order, and represent numbers in different ways. 🔢✨

In Science, we’ve been learning about habitats. The children explored our school’s wildlife area to observe living things in their local environment and then followed up their learning with a fantastic trip to Monkton Nature Reserve, where they discovered even more about how animals and plants survive and thrive in their natural habitats. 🐛🌿🦋

In Geography, we’ve been finding out about hot and cold places around the world. The children have compared different climates, explored where animals live, and discussed how people adapt to life in very different environments. ❄️☀️🌎

It’s been a brilliant term full of curiosity, creativity, and care for our planet — we’re so proud of all the children’s enthusiasm and hard work! 🌿💫
