Red Class Curriculum Information
Term 3 is well and truly under way and Year 2 classes have been very busy !
Our topic this term is ‘Our Colourful Past’ and the question that we are considering is: ‘What can we use as historians to investigate our history?’ In order to answer this question, the children will be travelling back in time and visiting different aspects of history starting in 1939 for World War 2 and going all the way back to pre-historic times.
This exciting topic will allow the children to explore and experience significant times in history. The four aspects of history we will focus on:
![]() |
World War 2 - We will begin this topic by going on an exciting school trip to the Ramsgate Tunnels, looking at this aspect of history from the perspective of a child evacuee, as well as researching the Blitz and making Anderson shelters.
|
|
The Great Fire of London - We will be looking at this aspect of history from the perspective of Samuel Pepys through his diary and writing our own entries. To get a real feel for this part of history, the children will be considering materials to create their own buildings of the time.
|
|
Egypt - The children will be writing fact files about Egypt. We will be exploring what was like to live in Ancient Egypt. We will consider the human and physical features of Egypt and make comparisons to the UK. As part of our science learning, we will discover more about mummification as we design a fair test to mummify and apple. |
|
Prehistoric - We will also be delving into the world of dinosaurs, digging fossils and creating our own. We will also be writing dinosaur poems.

As mathematicians, we start the term with a focus on money. The children will count and make amounts in different ways, finding change and solving problems involving money. We will move onto multiplication and division, which will include making and adding equal groups, considering the multiplication and division symbols and using arrays. We will continue to develop reasoning and problem-solving skills, focusing particularly on verbal explanations and proving answers to others.
During our art lessons, we will learn about the artist Henry Moore, exploring his war time sketches. We will develop our skills in a range of techniques to imitate sketches of people sheltering from The Blitz. We will continue to use charcoal, alongside selecting other media including pastels, chalk and paper to create layered artwork depicting The Great Fire of London.
In our RE lessons, we will be learning about the Judaism, exploring what is important to Jewish people and special celebrations such as Shabbat. In PSHE, we will be learning all about families and homes. In PE, we will be developing our gymnastics skills using large apparatus and sequencing a range of movements using our bodies and working together. We will also be developing our ball skills and thinking about strategies and tactics to improve performance. Red Class will be swimming weekly, whilst Yellow Class, who will swim next term, will be introduced to a variety of music pieces based on birdsong and compose and conduct our own music using our voices and body.
